With the current decrease in gas prices, would it be wise to invest in the oil and gas stocks?
In 2015 oil and gas is the weakest S&P 500 subsector without surprise from the 50% price drop in oil. But, this subsector is currently on the rise which shows that there is a great deal of buying currently taking place.
Knowing which stocks to invest your money into can be the most intricate factor in all of this. Sure, adding oil/energy related stocks to your portfolio is appealing, but you should always know the risks that may follow. It is wise to speak to your financial advisor.
Be wary of buying the "cheap" stock, over the last half year Energy Select Sector SPDR ha declined by about 21 percent while the S&P 500 has gone up by 6 percent. It's best to look for a company that is robust and not a company who is eliminating any of their dividends, which most likely means financial trouble. Companies such as Exxon Mobil and Chevron have paid and elevated their dividends for over 25 years, while companies such as Seadrill have eliminated dividends.
All of this leaves us with the question of, will the price go back up, and if so, why?
These we cannot answer but it is up to you if you want to invest while prices are so low. Nobody can predict exactly how it will all turn out but if you are confident that your investment won’t go bankrupt while you sit it out, your stock portfolio just might stand out before you know it.
