Finnfix LC is a low viscosity grade sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) that meets industry specifications established under API 3A, section 9 or ISO 135000, section 22.
Finnfix LC is used to reduce fluid losses in water based drilling fluids. Finnfix LC is preferred in those applications where fluid loss control is required with little impact on the overall viscosity profile of a drilling fluid.
Finnfix LC is functional in a wide range of drilling fluids, including systems formulated with bentonite and clay free fluids where biopolymers are used as the primary viscosifier. The long chain configuration of this cellulosic helps provide friction reduction in addition to forming a thin, compressible filter cake on the well bore. It can be used independently or in combination with other fluid loss additives for optimum filtration control. Finnfix LC is stable to normal fluctuations in pH and salinity including fresh water, seawater, and saturated sodium chloride.
Additions are generally made directly via the hopper. A 50 lb or 25 kg bag can be added in approximately 10 minutes. This helps minimize polymer lumping or fish eyes in the surface system. Although viscosity development is quickly observed, full viscosity development and hydration will be achieved after one full circulation.
An initial concentration of 1 - 3 lb/bbl (2.8 - 8.4 kg/m3) of Finnfix LC is recommended. Fluid formulation and overall viscosity needs will determine optimum maintenance treatments.
High concentrations of di-valent ions like calcium and magnesium can affect the efficiency of this polymer. At temperatures above 149 degrees Celsius (300 F) an oxygen scavenger is recommended for optimum polymer stability especially when exposed to elevated temperatures for extended periods.
Finnfix LC is a non-hazardous material and can be safely used in environmentally sensitive areas. It is included on the PLONOR list.
