Permian Basin: America's Best Fracking

Midland and Odessa Texas have been in the current oil boom for quite some time now, but is it going anywhere?

The last major bust hit the Permian Basin in the early 80's. Before that, the boom and high oil prices brought prosperity and many jobs to the area, along with a Rolls Royce dealership and a huge demand for housing.

With the bust over and the boom back in Midland and Odessa, a lot of thanks goes to the advanced techniques of hydraulic fracking and Horizontal oil-money-chartDrilling for extended oil production.

Hydraulic fracking, which is commonly just called fracking, is a drilling technique to extract oil from deep under the ground. Although this technique has been used for over 6 decades, horizontal drilling only became available in the 1990's. Simply, once a vertical well reaches the deep layer of rock, the well will curve at about a 90 degree angle and the horizontal drilling will begin and can extend over 1 mile from the well. Drilling fluid is then pumped into the well at a very high pressure, powerful enough to fracture the rock and create fissures and cracks to let oil and gas flow. This fairly new technique has unlocked vast amounts of deposits of shale in the Basin and other parts of Texas.

With the advanced drilling techniques and the basis that the Permian Basin has more oil than anywhere in the world, it seems the oil boom in the Basin is not going anywhere any time soon. These techniques are supplying more oil from old and new wells alike and the number of new oil wells have doubled over the last few years.
