Oil Based Mud (OBM) is used for many reasons such as increased lubricity, greater cleaning abilities with less viscosity.
Also OBM can withstand greater heat without breaking down.
Modern drilling muds have to fulfill multiple functions. The Oil-Based drilling mud systems are influenced by the following: Oil/Water ratio, Emulsifier type and concentration, Solids content and Downhole temperature and pressure. The hydrostatic pressures in the well bore are controlled by the weight of the drilling mud to overcome most formation pressure associated with water, oil or gas pressure. Drilling muds are a composition of various additives such as Oil, Diesel, Primary emulsifiers, Secondary emulsifiers, Fluid Loss Agents, Salinity sources, Viscosifiers, Weighting Agents and Lubricants and more.
Oil-Based Mud (OBM): Oil-based mud can be a mud where the base fluid is a petroleum product such as diesel fuel. Oil-based muds are used for many reasons, some being to increase the Penetration Rate, Lubricity, enhanced Shale Inhibition, and greater cleaning abilities with less viscosity. Oil-Based Muds also withstand greater heat-temperature stability and tolerance to contaminants without breaking down. The use of Oil-Based Muds has special considerations. These include cost and environmental considerations.
